The U.S. Housing Act of 1937 established the public housing program. The Act, administered by the United States Public Housing Authority, authorized loans to local public housing agencies for lower-rent public housing construction expenses. The Act enabled state legislation that charged local entities with providing decent, safe and sanitary housing for low to moderate income families and individuals.
In 1937, the Indiana General Assembly adopted enabling legislation giving local government authority to participate in federal low-rent housing programs. Subsequently, on the 8th day of February 1938, the Common Council of the City of Fort Wayne, Indiana, passed a resolution creating the Housing Authority of the City of Fort Wayne, Indiana. The chairman of the authority appointed an Executive Director in June that same year.
In 1938, WPA workers constructed the first 50 prefabricated three room homes which rented for $2.50 a week. Forty-four more such houses were constructed later that year on vacant city lots that were purchased by the Authority for $1.00.
The agency's Housing Choice Voucher Program, commonly referred to as Section 8, was established in 1975.
Today, the Fort Wayne Housing Authority serves more than 3,000 low-income families, including over 2,800 families housing through the Housing Choice Voucher Program and another 799 living in public housing and tax credit developments around the city.
The mission of the Housing Authority of the City of Fort Wayne is to provide good quality, affordable housing and superior services to eligible members of the Fort Wayne community and to maintain an atmosphere which encourages self-sufficiency.
